26/10/2009
The School lecturers N. Román and M.C. Muñoz win the tenth Science in Action Contest 2009, with the proposal “The Woman, innovative in science", which defends the deserved recognition of the women’s role in science.

These professors of the Department of Applied Mathematics IV of UPC are a part of the team that developed this project by the initiative of the Mathematician Women's Committee of RSME. The project has won the category of Scientific Dissemination Works on Suitable support.

This award is a well-earned recognition to a group of women who have been outstanding mathematicians in the development of science along history. The project created a great variety of activities, such as a biographic panel collection, which includes teaching material at the level of high school education, always linked to their researches. The material includes a travel book, a computer game, a puzzle and bookmarks with biographic information and mathematical problems as well. Lecture cycles have also been given by mathematician women.

In addition to this, interviews to current mathematician women are released in order to highlight the innovative role, and not the bystander position, of women in science. Other authors from this project are Autorais Ainhoa Berciano (University of the Basque Country), Carmen Jalón (CEP Luisa Revuelta of Cordoba), Josefina Ling (University of Santiago de Compostela), Marta Macho  (University of the Basque Country), Maria Isabel Marrero (University of La Laguna), Edith Padron (University of La Laguna), Mónika Sánchez (IES Beatriz Galindo), Teresa Valdecantos (SIPFA Algeciras, Cádiz) and Elena Vazquez University of Santiago de Compostela).
